Why Do We Focus on Ship Maneuvering?

The Prof. Lech Kobyliński Safety of Navigation Foundation was established in 1991 through the joint initiative of Gdańsk University of Technology, the Maritime University in Gdynia (formerly the Maritime Academy), and the city of Iława. The Foundation was created to continue and expand collaborative efforts that began in the mid-1970s, aimed at enhancing navigation safety and protecting the marine environment.

Our focus on ship manoeuvring stems from analyses of maritime accidents, which consistently identify two main causes: the human factor and far from optimal manoeuvring characteristics of vessels.
