Currently seven models
representing wide spectrum of ship types are available at the Centre for
training purposes. The models are equipped with all necessary devices simulating
a ship's
systems: main engine (motor or turbine), propellers (single and twin,
fixed and variable pitch), bow and stern thrusters, conventional and high lift
rudders, anchors. The new model of a LNG carrier has optionally the pod
propulsion (twin azipods). On all models the basic navigational aids (gyro, log,
navigational lights, wind velocity and direction measurer, etc.) are also
installed. All our manned models are
equipped with the system allowing the simulation
of tug-ship co-operation. For example the system installed on a VLCC
model consists of four propulsors (two similar to Schottel steering device and
two typical transversal thrusters) generating the thrust force. The special
computer programme taking into account several elements from tug geometric
characteristics, its type of propulsion and steering system and method of
assisting controls thrust forces developed by propulsors. The point of
application of these thrust forces was chosen taking into account as much as
possible real positions of tugs when co-operating with a ship. The bow and stern
are assumed to tow on a line. Two other tugs are working closer to midship, and
can assist the transversal motion or turn by pushing or pulling. Dangers related
to the tug's position are also indicated. The realistic visualisation of instant
tug's position completes the system. Similar system is also installed on the
model of a LCC tanker, of a LNG carrier and of a large container ship. Since 2006 the tug-ship
cooperation is also simulated using a new manned model of an escort tug. Thus
the two basic methods of tug assistance: direct and indirect
are possible to train.
Manned model of a large escort tug built in scale 1:24 Since
summer 2000 the Training Centre is equipped with high precision tracking system
based on GPS technology. The GPS receivers working in RTK mode and allowing to
measure the model's position within limits of 0.01m are at present installed on
three models, during next years such a receivers will be fitted on other models.
The new installation improved much quality of training by extending
the process of monitoring and analysis of manoeuvres realised by trainees. The table below shows basic data of Ilawa Centre
training models. Table 1. Main particulars of models used
